As a Maternity Photographer in Roanoke Virginia, the Sullivan’s Maternity/Family Session will be a hard one to forget. With this being the second time I had been their family photographer. Their first family portrait session with me was a few years ago back in the fall time at the Peaks of Otter. Fast forward to now, their son had grown so much and they are now about to welcome their little girl in September. While scheduling Mackenzie’s maternity session, she had many questions leading up to her portraits. Such as, when is the best time to schedule maternity portraits, and the best places to shop for maternity clothes. Mackenzie expressed to me that these were going to mean a lot to her as she deeply regretted not getting maternity or newborn portraits done with her first child. With that being said, I knew she wanted to prioritize capturing this season of life with her family and her little girl that would be arriving very soon. In this blog, I will share a lot of their portraits from their session. I will also mention some advice on when to schedule your maternity portraits, and my favorite shops for maternity dresses.

As a Roanoke Maternity Photographer I do not mind traveling outside of the realm of Roanoke Virginia for amazing locations. I chose The Old Mill Farm in Bedford that is just outside of Roanoke, as it always offers a gorgeous setting for any portraits. The grounds of the venue has endless flowers of all kinds and a whimsical weeping willow tree by their pond. That is always a favorite to take pictures right at sun set. During my time with the Sullivan family, I managed to find gorgeous pink flowers that was perfect for their little girl. We ended the session with Mackenzie’s second outfit showing off her bump as we sat by the pond and watched the sun slowly go down. If you are from the Roanoke area and do not mind traveling 45 minutes out of town, this particular location is one of my unique favorite spots to take my clients to for portraits.
When is the best time to schedule maternity portraits? This question gets asked a lot by expecting mothers. Honestly, it can look different for every mother based on how their pregnancy is going and how they are feeling. If you are expecting to carry full term, delivering at 40 weeks, I always tell mothers that the best time is to schedule right at the beginning of the 32-33 week mark. This is honestly a great time because those last weeks when you hit 35 weeks can be the long hard stretch of pregnancy. Maternity portraits typically take around 1.5-2 weeks to be delivered. Giving you plenty of time to enjoy your maternity portraits, finalize the nursery, and frame your gorgeous maternity portraits. If you are a momma that has been pregnant before, and you think it might be best to schedule your maternity portraits a bit earlier we can most certainly schedule them towards the end of the second trimester.

What sets my maternity portraits apart from any other session that I offer is the rescheduling availability. I always try to give mothers and families the option to reschedule within that same week time frame. Lastly, If you are a mother looking to schedule maternity portraits in the Roanoke Virginia area. I always highly encourage mothers to always consider newborn photography portraits as well. This time in your life will be the blurriest, and most delicate time. I promise you will want to remember every detail of your newborn baby. This chapter in your life deserves more than just documenting your baby bump but also as a new family. I have put together a few motherhood photography collections that are perfect for that first year as a mother.
