This was my last Smith Mountain Lake Family vacation photography session of the season and it was the most exciting and emotional for everyone! It was definitely one not to forget as not only was it a large family session, but a proposal was being secretly planned to take place right at the end of the session. As a Smith Mountain Lake family photographer, many families that I captured this year were no strangers to the area as they vacation here every year. The Duy family was one of those. With a family of ten, the Duy family do not get many opportunities to all be together through out the year. Most of their family is all spread out in Virginia and then some live in Washington state! It was the perfect opportunity to pop the big question while everyone was together and already taking family portraits.

If you are new to the Smith Mountain Lake area, or a local but never sure of the perfect spots right on the water I have you covered. Finding a location at the lake can sometimes be difficult since the lake is not your typical. Just google a park and take portraits there, or search a popular overlook on the Blue Ridge parkway with directions. Some spots on the lake are private, or you have to pay to enter, or it is a guest only access which can make it tricky. When you inquire with me, a location guide is sent to you after booking. The guide includes all of the best spots that I offer with information attached for each location. This information includes, the best times to take portraits, if it’s handicap friendly, walking distance, and if there is a access fee. All of these aspects are helpful if you are planning for younger children, or elderly family members to be apart of the session. The picture displayed above, is a little spot at Smith Mountain Lake State park that is great for all ages.

Planning a proposal at Smith Mountain Lake can be a little different than planning a family session. The best locations for a proposal are the most private ones. This will allow privacy, and your special moment to be undisturbed. If there is a specific location that you wish to pop the question at, I will always recommend the best times of day that may be less crowded. This couple here had their family session and proposal take place late Sunday evening and absolutely nobody was around! After all of the excitement with their family. I took them down a hill to get away for a few minutes on some floating docks that allowed them some time alone. It was the perfect evening to end their family vacation as they headed back home to Washington state to plan their wedding! The evening time is highly recommended, it allows for softer light so the lake is not so bright

Some of the best colors are earthy colors like creams, tans, and blues! As less crazy patterns as possible as it could be a distracting element in your portraits. It’s best if everyone coordinates the same color or same shade
For family lake portraits, it is a minimum of 30 Images.
a minimum 3 months out. I find myself booked out at least two months in advanced and one year out from weddings
